When the Rad Inks first released their Secure FTP applet it was a mere 145 kilo bytes in size. Large applets take significantly longer to download and start up and tend to be unpopular with internet users. The small size of the Rad SFTP applet leads to startup times similar to more traditional desktop software. The company has announced an improved version which despite having new features is ten percent smaller in size.
Java applets that connect to remote servers are extremely rare, applets that use cryptography in the process are virtually unheard of. Yet Rad SFTP does both while still managing to keep file size below 130kb. This is in spite of having a rich graphical user interface.
